Halloween may be over, but AMC is just getting started with zombie fare for viewers. Having opened their series "The Walking Dead" on October 25th, the channel that made drinking Tom Collins and wearing suits cool again thanks to "Mad Men" and that's offered other high end programming like "Breaking Bad" is now venturing into far gorier territory. "The Walking Dead", based on the comic book series by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore, shows the world after a zombie apocalypse as viewed by survivors in the southeast. Zombie terrain has been amply covered in past years, from the comical "Shaun of the Dead" and "Zombieland" to socially conscience statements like the British "Dead Set" or "28 Days Later". There are conflicting "rules" regarding zombies; some eat brains, the majority are happy to gnaw on anything. Traditionally, they've been slow-moving and gradually overwhelmed humanity, but playing with the zombie "virus" variation, some movies have preferred the infected to run down their victims with the speed of a gazelle. The rules in "The Walking Dead" reflect a few time-honored assumptions; the dead don't move so quickly, but they can gang up on you and will move in packs. They're not smart, and survivors, typically, find themselves beset by internal dramas that put the group in as much risk as taking a little nap on a street corner in the middle of a town filled with undead. The drama is what director Frank Darabont, ("The Mist", "The Green Mile") is banking on drawing viewers back to the series for on a regular basis. With Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes, the Kentucky sheriff survives the initial onslaught by riding out the attacks in a hospital much like leading character "Jim" did in "28 Days Later". After being shot and wounded, Grimes awakens in the hospital alone and unsure of what's happened. A cafeteria is locked and barred with the words, "Don't Open, Dead Inside". Fortunately, our hero fails to door or it would be a short series (A departure from the comic series, from which he survives). The show's initial engine is to try to locate his wife and son, whom he determines to likely be in Atlanta, Georgia. His journey takes him in contacted with plenty of the dead, but first with a little help from Morgan (Lennie James) and Duane (Adrian Kali Turner) who teach him how to survive in the new world. His family is alive, as is his ex-partner Shane Walsh (Jon Bernthal). But it seems not everyone is happy he survived. The series promises to carry on the gore, fear, and desperation as the group picks up and loses survivors and changes strategies to survive. Can AMC make zombies mainstream as it did smoking on television and revisiting the '60's? Possibly- let's wait and see what episode 2 has in store.
